The American Pharmacy AllianceSM Opens Pharmacy Enrollment for PromptRxSM Compliance Program

10/24/97

October 24, 1997, Lexington, Kentucky - The American Pharmacy Alliance (APA) announces the successful completion of the initial testing phase of its PromptRx compliance service. This nationwide program is designed to improve patient medication compliance through the combined efforts of The APA, its participating pharmacy management software companies, their community pharmacy customers, and Clark-O'Neill, an IMS company. Presently, medication non-compliance is estimated to account for more than $100 billion annually in health care and productivity costs. Beginning this month, pharmacies supplied by APA member companies may enroll in the PromptRx service through their pharmacy software vendor.

APA members recently polled their more than 11,000 independent and small chain pharmacy clients and received an overwhelming, positive response to the PromptRx program. APA, in conjunction with partner Clark-O'Neill recently presented the PromptRx program to the senior management of over 70 of the largest Drug Manufacturers and Pharmaceutical Industry leaders who attended an invitation only meeting focusing on Patient Compliance issues. Many of these manufacturers expressed interest in the PromptRx service, and discussions are currently underway to determine their levels of participation.

Clark-O'Neill's principal role in the partnership will be to provide direct-to-consumer communications. The goal will be to remind patients of due dates for prescription refills and help them realize the benefits of continuing their medication without interruption. Compliance communications will be managed through Clark-O'Neill's pharmacy operations to assure full pharmacy control of the compliance process. All correspondence will be tightly coordinated with the patient's local pharmacist, and only those patients who are enrolled in the compliance program with their pharmacist will receive communications.

The American Pharmacy Alliance, formed in 1996, is a consortium of 16 leading pharmacy software companies, and is headquartered in Lexington, KY. Its purpose is to help provide and manage access to beneficial products and services for independent and small chain pharmacies, their customers, and software vendors nationwide.
